You don’t need a weekend or a shopping trip to transform your pantry. Sometimes, all it takes is a couple of hours, a little focus, and a willingness to let go of what you don’t need.
Recently, I helped a client declutter and organize a pantry that also doubled as general storage space. In just two hours — and with no money spent on supplies — we turned a disorganized, catch-all room into a space that actually works.
Here’s exactly how we did it:
1. Purge
We started by clearing out everything that was expired or that the client knew she’d never use. The same went for non-food items that no longer served a purpose. This step alone made a huge difference — once the unnecessary stuff was gone, we could really see what was left.
2. Sort
Next, we sorted everything into categories.
Food: snacks, breakfast, baking, pantry staples, etc.
Non-food: games, art supplies, laundry, cleaning, tools, outside, plants, pet, and more.
Grouping like items together helped us see what we had too much of and what needed better homes.
3. Contain
Then we used bins and baskets the client already owned to keep each category together. No fancy matching containers — just practical solutions that made it easy to find and return things.
4. Create Zones
Finally, we gave each group of categories a “zone.”
Food in the most accessible area (and away from the litter box)
Cleaning and Home Maintenance along the other wall
Rarely Used Items in the corners and harder-to-reach spots
We even made room under the shelves for the litter box, which freed up space along the wall for garbage and recycling.
The Result
In just two hours, the pantry was transformed. Not only was it organized and functional, but it also had enough room to relocate the client’s spices and baking ingredients from an awkward kitchen cupboard into the pantry — where they’re now much easier to access.
No new containers. No fancy labels. No spending spree. Just time, attention, and a good process. Check out the before and after pictures below!

The Takeaway
You don’t necessarily need to spend money to get organized. And you don't need weeks or months to make good progress. Start with what you have, focus on function over aesthetics, and work with your space — not against it.
