Simple Systems: Organize Things the Way You Look for Things

When it comes to organizing, it’s easy to get caught up in making everything look just right. Matching containers, pretty labels, perfectly color-coded everything. But here’s a secret: the best organizing systems aren’t necessarily the prettiest—they’re the ones that actually work for you.
Organize the Way You Think
Want to make sure your system works long-term? Organize things the way you look for them. Your system should follow your logic—not just what looks good on Pinterest.
Ask yourself:
Where would I look for this? (Put it there.)
How do I usually search for this item? (Organize it that way.)
What other things do I associate with this? (Group them together.)
These small tweaks can make a big difference. They’ll help you build systems that are intuitive, effective, and way less frustrating.
Real-Life Example: The Great Yarn Overhaul
Here’s an example from my own life: my yarn stash. (I recently spent two hours decluttering and reorganizing my yarn. Yes, I had enough yarn to make it a two-hour project. Don’t judge.)
When I look for yarn, I think about weight first—worsted, bulky, fingering—not color. So my system reflects that.
Now, I have two main bins:
One for worsted weight yarn (because I have... a lot of it)
One for everything else
Inside the "Worsted" bin, I use clear zip-top bags to sort by brand/type—because that’s how I search within the weight category. In the "Not Worsted" bin, I have a bag for each of the other weights.
It’s simple. I can find what I need without causing a yarn avalanche. And, it’s easy to put things away when I’m done. It’s not Pinterest-perfect—but it works for me.

Simple Systems Stick
The more closely your system matches how you think, the easier it’ll be to use—and to keep using. Simple = sustainable. Simple, sustainable systems will keep you organized long-term... without losing your mind (or your favorite skein of yarn).
