Kitchen Without a Pantry? This $40 Solution Created More Counter Space

My family's cottage has been in our family for more than 60 years. It's the kind of place filled with memories, traditions... and cupboards packed with decades worth of stuff.
The kitchen has never had a pantry, and every cabinet is already full of dishes, serving pieces, and kitchen gadgets accumulated over generations.
Now, the obvious solution would be to declutter a lot of it.
But when there are multiple owners involved—Midwestern owners, no less, who would rather work around excess stuff than risk offending someone by suggesting that the 60-year-old hand-crank egg beater might not actually be a treasured family heirloom—well, let's just say that hasn't happened. Despite my best efforts.
As a result, for as long as I can remember, much of the food we have while we're there ends up living on the kitchen counters.
If you've ever tried to organize a kitchen without a pantry, you probably know this struggle. When cabinet space is limited, the counters often become the default storage area.

Sure, this set-up is convenient. Everything is easy to see and grab.
But it also means there's barely any room left for actual food prep.
A Small Kitchen Storage Idea That Made a Big Difference
Last week while we were at the cottage, my mom pointed to the narrow space beside the stove—the spot that used to house the TV trays (metal ones, of course... because what cottage that has been around since the 1960s doesn't have metal TV trays?)—and asked what I would do with it.

My answer was immediate: a rolling cart.
For kitchens without a pantry, making use of every available inch is essential, and this little nook seemed like the perfect opportunity to add some extra storage.
I took some measurements, did a quick search, and found a cart that checked all the boxes:
It fit the space perfectly, maximizing storage while still leaving a little wiggle room.
It had wheels, making it easy to pull out and access items in the back.
It had high sides, so nothing would tumble out when the cart was moved.
And it cost just $40.
Ten minutes after it arrived, it was assembled and loaded up.

Clear Counters (Even in a Kitchen Without a Pantry)
The result? The food still has a designated home, but the counters are no longer buried under boxes, bags, and snacks.
And wow, what a difference.
Clear counters instantly make a kitchen feel calmer, more functional, and more spacious—even when you haven't added a single square foot of storage.

Would I still love to declutter those cupboards someday? Absolutely.
But sometimes the best possible organizing solution isn't perfect. It's simply the one that works for the people using the space right now.
And for $40 and 10 minutes of effort, this small kitchen storage solution has already earned its keep.
