A yellow road sign that says "spring cleaning just ahead" on a background that is blue sky with some white clouds.

Happy spring! (Or if you're in Wisconsin like me—happy late winter! Because we all know better than to trust spring before April. 😆)

If you’re diving into spring cleaning this month, you might be wondering if now is a good time to declutter too. My answer? Yes! But only if you have a reason.

Don’t Declutter Just Because You “Should”

Decluttering without a clear purpose often leads to frustration. You might not see the results you were hoping for, and it’ll be hard to maintain any progress. Instead, before you start tossing things into a donation box, ask yourself:

✅ Do you feel less stressed in a clutter-free space?

✅ Are you constantly losing things?

✅ Do you run late because you can’t find what you need?

✅ Have you bought duplicates of items you already own?

✅ Is clutter causing tension in your relationships?

✅ Is it making your daily routines harder than they need to be?

Your reason matters. Keeping it in mind will keep you focused, motivated, and help you make decisions about what stays and what goes.

No Purpose? No Problem!

If none of these reasons resonate with you, that’s okay! Stick to spring cleaning for now, and come back to decluttering when it feels right—not just when you feel like you "should."

Decluttering with intention leads to lasting results. So if you’re tackling the clutter this spring, do it with a purpose, and watch how much more impactful it becomes!
